Discover Goldmine Restaurant

Goldmine Restaurant sits quietly at 3127 S First St, Garland, TX 75041, United States, but locals talk about it like it’s an open secret. The first time I walked in, I was coming off a long shift at a nearby job site, hungry and a little skeptical of another strip-mall diner. Ten minutes later, with a plate of chicken fried steak the size of my forearm, I realized why coworkers kept calling it hidden gem and old school comfort food done right.

The menu leans heavy into classic American diner fare, but it doesn’t feel copied from a freezer catalog. I once watched the cook roll out biscuit dough behind the counter while chatting with a regular about the Cowboys game. That kind of hands-on process shows in the food. Their gravy isn’t the thin, overly salty stuff; it’s thick, peppery, and made in small batches. According to the Texas Restaurant Association, scratch cooking in independent diners has dropped below 30% statewide, mostly because of rising food costs, so seeing a place still doing it the hard way is rare and honestly impressive.

What really sold me was breakfast. A friend who manages food safety training in Dallas told me that short-order breakfast kitchens are where corners usually get cut. At this place, the eggs came out fluffy, not rubbery, the bacon crisp without being brittle, and the hash browns had that perfect balance of crunch and softness. She later checked their inspection history through the Garland health department database, which is publicly available, and confirmed they’ve maintained consistently high sanitation scores over the past few years. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially in a time when people are more cautious about where they eat.

The reviews online echo the same themes: generous portions, friendly service, and prices that feel like they’re from another decade. During a recent visit, I spoke with a retired couple who drive in from Rowlett every Sunday because, as they put it, this place still remembers your name. They weren’t exaggerating. The server greeted them before they even sat down and asked if they wanted their usual omelets with extra onions.

Lunch brings in a different crowd. Construction workers, office staff, even students from nearby schools. The burger lineup deserves its own spotlight. They use fresh beef patties, grilled flat-top style, which gives that caramelized crust you can’t fake. Research from the National Restaurant Association shows that flat-top grilling preserves moisture better than open-flame methods, and you can taste the difference here. The meat stays juicy without drowning in grease.

One case study that stuck with me involved a small catering order they handled for a local church fundraiser last fall. The organizer told me they needed meals for 120 people on short notice after another vendor canceled. Goldmine stepped in, prepared pans of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls, and delivered on time. Not a single complaint came back, which is almost unheard of in community events.

Of course, no place is perfect. Parking can get tight during peak breakfast hours, and they don’t offer online ordering yet, which some people might miss. Also, the interior décor hasn’t changed much in years, so if you’re looking for modern Instagram vibes, you won’t find them here. Still, the worn booths and laminated menus feel honest, like they’ve earned their patina through decades of real use.

There are only a handful of locations left in Garland that still operate like this, focusing on neighborhood loyalty instead of chasing trends. Food writers from local publications like Dallas Observer have repeatedly noted that diners with stable menus and consistent staff outperform trend-driven cafés in long-term customer retention, and this place is living proof. Every visit adds another face you recognize, another dish you crave before you’ve even ordered, and another reason the word of mouth keeps growing across Garland and nearby towns.

  • This spot serves delicious, comforting home-style cooking at great prices, with portions that are impressively large. The menu is extensive, offering something for everyone, and the service is consistently friendly and attentive. The décor is a bit aged, but it actually adds to the charm and cozy atmosphere. Overall, a fantastic place for hearty meals and great value.

  • Update: 6/15. Same great service and excellent menu choices. We ordered breakfast with chicken fried steak and it was delicious. Hash brown had the right amount of crispness. What a delight. I pass by this place hundred time and finally decided to go in. What a great surprise! Absolutely the best friendly service, great food and even greater prices. My friend kept telling me not to post a review otherwise the word will get out and the place will be so busy we won't find a seat next time... LOL. Breakfast was great and service was top notch with friendly experienced staff. The place has been here for many many years and even though the years show up in the decor and surroundings but I went there for the food and it was excellent with great friendly staff as a bonus. My order was exactly the way I requested it. A fruit plate to start was the extra nice surprise that you don't get anywhere else. Come to this place and bring your friends too. We will be visiting again soon for dinner.

  • We went for lunch and had their onion rings, BLT, chicken fried chicken, and chicken fried steak. I must say they do give you plenty of food and side items. They also served a basket of rolls and cornbread with it all. The prices are very budget friendly. I was a little hesitant about ordering the chicken fried steak based on some reviews I read but it was pretty good to me. Staff was also friendly and gave us good service. We'll for sure come back to try other menu items in the near future. It is a little dated but don't let that fool you. Overall it was really good.

  • We tried this place for dinner one night and we were greeted and seated at a table immediately. Our server got our drink orders and then return to get our food order. I ordered the Fried Chicken Dinner Special and my partner ordered the Texas Platter. Both were delicious and come with two sides of your choice. Everything is made house homemade style. The Fried Onion Rings were incredible and Mashed Potatoes and Gravy were like Mom use to fix. The Tater Tots were very good cooked to perfection and the Peach Cobbler was outstanding. The Fried Chicken Special is three pieces White or Dark meat or a mix. The Texas Platter is a Hamburger Steak served open face with Chili and Cheese which was very good. The restaurant was clean as were the restroom. This is a very old place, if you do not like the rustic feel this is not the place for you. The food is cooked perfect and service is like going to someone's house. Love this food and service and will be coming back again and again.

  • Service was slow but the food made up for it. I sat next to a couple and ended up having a good conversation about the area. It was very pleasant. I ordered the meatloaf with carrots, mashed and a sad. Everything was great.

  • It took way too long for our food to come out, we were getting hangry. But, once it came out, it was hot and fresh and delicious! (Except the canned green beans.) Service was friendly. Portions were big and prices were decent.

  • This little place has been open for a long time and has not change much inside. The food is pretty good, decently priced and good waiting service. It’s a few minutes from 635 and if you are driving by go there instead of the chain food. Good, comfort, and homey food. Sit and enjoy the food, it has enough parking space, easy in and out. It was $29 for two of us but the plates could easily feed 4.
